If you sew you probably use a pincushion, but this doesn’t have to be boring. If you have friends or family who sew as well here is a whole book of twelve different projects that are sure to put smiles on the recipients’ faces.

They are also fun to make, great ways of using up scraps and are ideal for fundraising. This is a book with projects by several different people and does not have an introduction or a section on techniques of what you need. A certain basic level of sewing knowledge is therefore essential, but if you require a pincushion you should already have enough to proceed! Each project lets you know what you need, gives the finished size, a thumbnail description of the designer and construction, cutting and other instructions in words. There is the odd simple diagram or layout and a page of basic hand embroidery stitches, while at the back are all the patterns helpfully life size. Choose from various variations on the basic cushion-type square including embroidered, log cabin or kaleidoscope patchwork plus pincushions in the shape of a house, ladybug, cupcake, donut, elephant and ant. As this is an American book measurements are in imperial and the stocklist at the back for all the fabric is for US residents, but mostly the fabrics used are fairly plain or generic prints. The detail is in the shaping and decoration, making this a book for using with a vast array of fabrics. This is a fun book of simple projects that is going to appeal to a wide range of stitchers.

If you are like me and always losing your pins, these projects are fun to make and useful too. Sometimes it is good to have small projects to sew that are finished quickly. There are a variety of 12 different shapes, that even include an ant and they have wide appeal. It's a great selection. You can also adapt the idea and make many more pincushions. For example, the cupcake could be adapted with different colours and embellishments into dozens of pincushions. Various techniques are used to create the pincushions from applique to piecing and embroidery. Each pincushion is designed by a different designer and has appeared in a previous publication. The instructions are clear and the photos are great - this is a fun yet practical book for any sewing enthusiast.

I love this series of books from C & T Publishing. They bring together different designers and create some amazing projects. I love pincushions. I collect them including ones I make so this book is ideal for me. Each of the designers create their own look of project and fill it with their own personality. Using sewing, embroidery and different designs the projects are all different. The pincushions are great fun and the only problem you may have is choosing which one to make first. The patterns have full instructions including diagrams to help  you put the pieces together. All the patterns are held in the back of the book and are of a full size. I personally will copy from the book, just to use to create the projects. I'll be making quite a few if not all of the designs. All the designs are great fun
and make fantastic pincushions.
