Feb 14 Lesley has been a knitting and crochet editor for several women's magazines, so she really knows her stuff. We think her clever little book-in-a-box would make an excellent gift for a crochet-loving friend. Inside is a 64-page book with 10 flower patterns from her worldwide bestselling book 100 Flowers to Knit & Crochet, eight colourful yarns (enough to make three flowers), and a crochet hook. You can use your finished flowers to embellish handmade garments or turn them into eye-catching brooches.

Dec 13 When is a book not a book? When it is in a box with a selection of wools and a crochet hook! This is a craft kit just in time for Christmas from the people who know craft best. In here are the instructions for ten lovely flowers, plus eight skeins of double knit yarn for three of them and a 4mm metal hook. On the reverse of the box (nice and sturdy for keeping projects in and closed with and invisible magnet) it tells you what is inside. It also tells you – rather erroneously – that it is suitable for “those new to crochet” but what this actually means is that a newcomer to crochet who already knows the basic stitches can make it up. Inside the book you can find instructions for chain, slipstitch and making a row but not double, treble etc, which you need to know in order to make the flowers. If you are buying it for a total beginner who has never picked up a hook before you also need to get them one of Search Press’ excellent beginner’s books on crochet as well. However, as long as you can do a few simple stitches these flowers are ideal early projects as they make up fast and look great. Adorn jacket lapels, dress up an adorable baby garment (one of the ideas shown) or trim a hat. They are great ways of using up oddments and are sure to appeal to crocheters of most levels…apart from total beginners. A great idea, and the first of many kits I hope.

Nov 13 Here’s a great gift idea for anyone who loves crochet. It consists of a paperback book that will show you how to crochet flowers. A good quality crochet hook is included and a range of eight colourful yarns to get you started. The whole kit is neatly boxed as the perfect gift. The book includes patterns for ten flowers. Each one is clearly photographed, with clear instructions. You can make Hellebore, Rose, Aster, Myosotis, Convallaria, Primula, Narcissus, Pelargonium, Fuchsia and Viola. They are all beautiful and can be seen on the front cover. The book gives just two ideas of how to use the flowers, but I can think of many. Both written and chart instructions are given. In addition, there are instructions on crochet at the beginning of the book. This book is suitable for all skill levels, but is more appealing to the beginner.
