Book Description

Stunning and unique interlace knitwear patterns created from beautiful Viking designs.

Ever since her ground-breaking book Viking Patterns for Knitting was published, Elsebeth Lavold has been recognised as one of the world’s leading experts on cabling. In the book, described as an indispensable milestone in 20th century knitting literature, she introduces her own innovation, using lifted increases to create interlace patterns instead of just to shape garments, and to bring new life to the ornamental heritage of the Vikings as adornment on modern knitwear.

With more than a decade of added experience and continued research, she is now ready to take the concept a step further. Still firmly based in her Scandinavian roots, she has studied cultures from all over the globe to find similar types of patterns. This has resulted in a fascinating compilation of ornamental expressions, ancient as well as contemporary, and just as in Viking Patterns for Knitting she uses them as a launch pad for her own unique designs.

Elsebeth genuinely enjoys sharing her knowledge. In addition to the abundance of beautiful garments presented in the book with complete instructions, she has analysed a huge number of pattern types and displays them in both swatch and chart form, to allow you to make your own designs based on her research.

About the Author

About Elsebeth Lavold

Journal of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers

The title of this book is very apt; it is a splendid blend of both pattern book and historical journey. It opens with an introduction to the decorative styles used by different ancient cultures across the world and how these styles intertwine throughout history.

Each of her seven major styles is then covered in its own section, containing both colour photos and detailed pencil drawings of a wide range of ancient artefacts, to help explain the history and details of each style, along with knitting charts and swatches to show their translation into textiles.

Each section has several knitting patterns constructed from these charts, which are very clearly laid out including a full page photo of the finished garment or accessory.

At the end of the book there is a closing technical section with guidelines - the 'grammar' of Viking knitting, to help confident knitters create their own garments. There is also information on suggested knitting techniques and how to read pattern charts for novice knitters.

While the patterns in this book are mainly women's jumpers and jackets, it also has a range of other garments, including a panelled skirt, child's cardigan, baby's jumper and several accessories such as bags, scarf, hat and cushion cover.

Overall this is a very well laid out book, with excellent and varied illustrations and instructions.
