Still life painting can require great skill, and demonstrate as much subtlety and sophistication of technique, as any form of painting. But it can also be reduced to forms so simple as to be almost abstract.
It will also give you infinite opportunities of experimenting with your palette, using both pure colours and mixtures, and of dealing with problems such as reflected light, deep shadow and the simulation of various textures, all of which will stand you in good stead, whatever type of painting you may undertake in the future.
