Over the last year, I have had the pleasure of working alongside wonderfully innovative people within the crafting industry. This environment has let my creativity flourish, and I have become incredibly passionate about the crafts I’ve tried; crochet, embroidery and collage have awoken a more artistic version of myself. The sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a project is unmatched.

A large part of my role has been helping across departments wherever needed, which has provided me with a firm understanding of changing and emerging trends in the crafting world.

Crafting has seen a major rise in recent years, amplified by the desire to be more mindful and expressive. A large proponent of this increase is due to a younger demographic desiring a creative outlet, especially in the face of overexposure to screens.

In an age of technology, trends are everchanging. Social media is a fantastic tool for creating a sense of community and shaping trends. Being able to see trends grow and transform through both industry perspective and personal experience has been fascinating.

People of all generations are being inspired to pick up their hooks and needles. This is one trend we expect to continue indefinitely: the increasing desire to create.

However, with the increase in generative A.I. patterns in online spaces, predominantly on Etsy and Pinterest, designers and crafters are facing a significant challenge in the craft industry. Fake, unusable patterns are flooding the internet and diverting exposure away from those who devote their time to designing and creating.

To combat this, we see crafters seeking out human-made designs and physical craft books, as well as leaning toward eco-friendly materials and natural fibres. As a result, bricks-and-mortar stores have seen a rise in popularity, as customers can truly see the quality of the products and patterns they are buying.

With Coloro’s 2027 colour of the year being Luminous Blue, like our Moomin Embroidery cover, next year will bring vibrant colours and a gradual shift away from minimalism. Expect to see fun, dynamic colours and visual intrigue in designs – whether in your own projects or in trending crafts: mosaic and filet crochet, modern quilting, cross-stitch, beading and textured embroidery, sheer knits and more.

While A.I. has attempted to infiltrate craft spaces, creatives have not let it dull their shine in the slightest. The power of social media comes from its insistence to keep people up-to-date on the strength and intrigue of human-made art. 2027 will certainly bring exciting, forward-thinking designs and techniques across a multitude of hobbies.

No matter the trends that emerge in the coming year, the recent growth in creative pursuits has been inspiring to see, and we will continue to encourage it every step of the way.
