Book Description

100 decorative, stylised designs inspired by the beautiful linear patterns and images of the Art Deco movement. The book is divided into six sections: scenic, floral, figures, animals, abstract and patterns, and the inclusion of a CD means that designs can be easily scanned, enlarged, reduced, or used same size, adapted, or mixed and matched with other illustrations to create original projects and artworks.
This new and exciting style permeated all areas of life in the 1930s, like no other artistic movement before or since then. encompassing architecture, fashion, furniture, textiles, jewellery, art, graphic design and illustration. Even the most basic utilitarian objects were influenced by the linear style. The angular forms that were developed by Art Deco craftsmen and artists were streamlined and simplified in original and wonderful ways. The illustrations in this book offer many ideas and images for translation into stitch, colour and form - for anyone researching an idea, or looking for different ways to approach a project.

The term 'Art Deco' is taken from the title of the great Paris exhibition of 1925 'L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs', but it was only coined when the style was revived in the late 1960s. This is a fantastic design sourcebook containing 100 original designs, which can be combined with other images, or enlarged and used as the main theme for a special piece of work. All images are copyright free and the package includes a free CD-Rom with contains 100 Tiff and Jpeg images.

Art Deco Designs and Art Nouveau Designs: Both these books, published as part of Search Presss Design Library, feature new designs relating to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. There is a good variety of designs here. In Art Deco, these include figures, animals and floral motifs. Quite a few of the designs were bold, there were some iconic Art Deco designs, and a good number would translate well to textile design. Art Nouveau Flowers also held a variety of styles, with several suitable for creating stencils. I could also see sections that would be striking (leaves for example), and the borders had some bold shapes that could be developed further. If either of these periods appeals to you in terms of the work you do, then they would be a useful addition to your library.
