Crafting a Brighter Future: New Research Shows UK’s Art and Craft Industry is Booming

Far from being a niche pastime, arts and crafts are enjoying a renaissance, as new research shows Britons are devoting more time to their hobbies and continuing to buy books and resources to fuel their creativity. The findings reveal an industry in robust health, playing a vital role not only in the economy but also in supporting the nation’s wellbeing.

Research into members of Bookmarked, a membership site for art and craft book buyers, highlights a surge of interest in creative pastimes. Nearly half (45%) of respondents reported spending more time on their hobbies in the past year, while a further (42%) have maintained their levels of activity. This sustained engagement is driving book sales: almost one in three (31%) are buying more art and craft books than before, and over half are maintaining steady purchasing.

“Craft publishing remains one of the most resilient sectors in the book trade,” said Martin de la Bedoyere, Managing Director of Search Press. “These figures show that creativity is a deeply embedded part of people’s lives, with books at the heart of inspiration and learning.”

The recent Hobbycraft Power of Making Report confirms a deep personal and societal impact of crafting. A quarter of Brits now craft at least monthly, with 15% doing so weekly. More than half (53%) say it boosts their mood, and 59% feel a sense of achievement when completing a project. With 72% of adults supporting the idea of arts and crafts being prescribed by health professionals, the link between creativity and wellbeing is clearer than ever.*

The success of TV show's The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down are another indicator of the health of the industry, with Channel 4s The Game of Wool due to air soon and set to continue that trend. Meantime, social media is awash with ideas and inspiration for aspiring artists, designers and crafters alike.

Martin concluded "There might be a perception that traditional crafts, and particularly books for artists and crafters, are being replaced by other media choices. All of the data, not least our own book sales performance, indicates this is a vibrant and growing market with traditional enthusiasts but also a great interest amongst a younger, Gen Z audience. The recent Hobbycraft study also demonstrates the important relationship between hobbies and mental health, something we hear all the time from our customers."
